We caught up with Bart van Liempd, CEO of Exergen Global, following his whirlwind trip to China. Along with Exergen Global’sHangzhou-based partner, Multi IR, Bart represented Exergen Global at The Optoelectronic and Infrared Imaging Expo, held at the Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center, and at Sensor China Expo & Conference, held at the Shanghai Convention & Exhibition Center of International Sourcing. He also visited a number of customers and prospects throughout China. Here are some of Bart’s observations regarding his trip and the sensor market in China.

1. You just returned from traveling throughout China for almost two weeks. What are your observations?
I was really struck by the disparity between how China’s cities are perceived, and the reality I observed firsthand. While many people think that China’s cities aren’t as modern as other major cities worldwide--like London, Amsterdam or New York, the places I visited had very modern infrastructure and buildings, and the citizens were sophisticated and technologically savy. I was also impressed by that fact that in addition to the well-known major cities--Shenzen, Shanghai, Beijing—there are dozens of other large, sophisticated and very productive cities, like Hangzou and Xiangzhou.

China’s reputation for reliable manufacturing and innovative technology has significantly increased in recent years as the country continues to make quality and reliability a priority. Everyone is very committed to that goal in China—which of course dovetails perfectly with what Exergen Global stands for.

The Market Opportunity

The global market for luggage is growing at a brisk pace and is expected to reach an estimated value of USD $43.4 billion in 2020. As tourist and business traffic see a robust increase, expenditures on luggage, including suitcases, travelling bags, business and computer bags, will continue to grow as well.

The Manufacturing Process

Frequently, hard-sided luggage is manufactured using a process called vacuum forming (also known as thermoforming). During vacuum forming, a sheet of plastic, such as ABS Polycarbonate board, is heated to a forming temperature, stretched onto a single-surface mold, and forced against the mold by a vacuum. The heaters used in vacuum forming are generally infrared elements mounted within a reflector plate. To obtain the best vacuum forming results, it is essential that the plastic sheet is heated uniformly over its entire surface area and throughout its thickness. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to have a series of heating zones that are controlled by energy regulators. If the heat is not regulated properly, damage will occur to the plastics, and possibly to the machinery.
